Recent Updates to Rural Church Buildings

We have a deep heart to serve the rapid growth now found in the Church in China. One of our two main projects is a rural Church Building project, where our network of Christian pastors have asked us for help to build rural Church buildings. On this page, we will be giving you a monthly update on the progress of the churches we have under construction.

First, a little info about where our churches are being built. We are currently working in Henan province and Hubei province. You can see on this map of China were these two provinces are located:

August 2010 Update
We currently helping build four church buildings, two in Henan and two in Hubei. Here’s some background info and an update on each of the four churches.

Henan Churches:
Hou Shuang Miao Church

Hou Shuang Miao Church, pastored by Elder Yang Bao Hong is Southeast of the provincial capital of Zhengzhou. This church currently serves an area with over 6 administrative villages and towns, which covers an area of 3 square miles, with a population of 63,000 people.

The original Hou Shuang Miao church was built in 1982, when about 40 local believers built the church on donated land. The church has about 300 members every Sunday morning, but they hope that with their new building they will increase their attendance to 400 on Sunday mornings. Over the last 10 years, church members have contributed 40,000 Yuan ($5128 U.S.) toward a new church building, so it was a pleasure for us to be able to partner together with them to help them finish the new church building.

Gu Cheng Church

Gu Cheng Church started during the Cultural Revolution in a local home as the meeting place. At that time, they had 16 mature believers. Over the last thirty years, they have seen steady growth and are now up to about 400 members. Since their congregation grew too large for any one home, they’ve been meeting in a field for Sunday worship. By 2005, we had grown to have 320 members. Since their numbers had gotten so large, the only place in their area to meet to worship was in a field. Now pastored by Rev. Jiao Yong Xing, they are thrilled to use their new church building to impact the growing suburban Luoyang population now beginning to surround what was open fields not long ago. Village officials donated the land for their church building.

The shandy-type structure finally built to keep the congregation dry while they wait for new church to be built.

Hubei Churches:
Ma Ti Kou Church

Ma Ti Kou Church is located in Hubei Province, Jiangxia district. It was founded in 1990 with 40 original members meeting in a local farmer's house. In 1993, the church purchased an abandoned munitions facility as the new meeting place. A shabby, mud-floored structure of 200 square meters, it was certainly an upgrade from the previous meeting place, and God really used this building to add to the numbers of the church. They now have over 250 members and another 30 who are seeking Christ.

The Church is led by Elder Xiao Jiandong, a 62 year-old man who was born into a Christian family. They have a leadership team of 9 men who all contribute to the operation of the church and its ministry to the surrounding village. Four of these men, including Elder Xiao, have finished a 9 month training curriculum presented in the provincial capital of Wuhan. All Jiangxia District churches come under the jurisdiction of Rev. Liu Linsheng, who graduated from Wuhan Seminary in 1988.

Since their current building in now in serious disrepair, they are looking forward to being able to build a new church building. The current building’s roof is leaking, the walls cannot hold their own weight and this building needs to be torn down. They have just received permission from the local village to build a new church on a different piece of land. This land, which sits right at the entrance to the village, is a strategic location for the new church. There are nine villages which our church serves, with a total population of about ten thousand people.

Shu An Church

Shu An Church is located in Hubei Province, China. Located in the Jiangxia district, the new church building will serve two Christian meeting points, Shu An and Ba Xiu, that will come together to meet at one church facility.

Shu An Christian meeting point was founded by 19 local Christian farmers in 1985. They started meeting in an abandoned grain storage house. In 1998, they were able to build a small, 30 square meter church building that was built entirely by church members. This church building could hold about 40 people on Sunday morning. This is currently the building they have been using, although the roof leaks when it rains and there are no Sunday school classrooms or any other meeting rooms. It is only one room, which is the main meeting hall. Shu An Church now has about 68 members.

The Ba Xiu Christian meeting point was founded by 13 local Christian farmers in 1985. They rented an old house as their first meeting place and in 1998, and they self-built a 70 square meter church building. This first church building was very simply built and never really worked very well for their needs since it was not built with very sturdy materials.

For both meeting points, our main pastor is Rev. Liu Lin Sheng. We also have two other volunteer preachers that we use for evangelical meeting and for Sunday morning service. The pastor and volunteer preachers have all received theological training courses in the provincial capital of Wuhan.
